My name is Maryee and I am the moderator of the blog exchange. My hair has been Sisterlocked since 11-28-03 and the "sisterhood" has been growing by the day. Most of the blogs are that of women who have their hair Sisterlocked, simply because the idea came from a discussion we had December 2005 in Lockitup, which is a yahoo group that discusses primarily Sisterlocks. Sisterlocks is just one way in which locks can be created. The locked hair blog exchange is more about embracing any kind of naturally locked hair for people of color. We do have a few brothers who blog about their locs, but could use a few more who are willing to share.

Women and men are being inspired to get back to their natural selves and be free from chemical bondage. That's a good thing. The blogs have been a source of inspiration and encouragement for any and everyone at what ever stage they are in their locking journey. Many who want to read about personal stories find the exchange a great place to start because most of the bloggers update regularly. You'll read about good days and bad days, but mostly good days. You'll see lots of photos and some who are really passionate, will share "how-tos".

So for the sake of clarity, the blog exchange is for anyone (male or female) who has their hair in a locked state and you blog about your hair, it's maintenance or have lots of photos of your hair in a blog or online photo album is invited to join. You'll learn about the bloggers personal/professional lives among other things which makes for entertaining reading. Be careful though, cause blog surfing and blogging can get a bit addictive. Ask most of the avid bloggers.

The guidelines are here, so check it out if you are interested. You won't spend much time here, because the purpose of the blog exchange is for you to visit the blogs/albums below. This is just a central location. Add the exchange to your favorites or blogroll it and if you have a blog and are not a member yet, go ahead and link the exchange. And by all means, show the bloggers some love by commenting on their blog posts. They'd sure appreciate it. Also, if you are new to the blogging community, please check out this post for some suggestions on how to get started. Dreadlocks Hair Care!

Dreadlocks are a natural way of wearing your hair that was made world-famous by Bob Marley and the Rastafarians in Jamaica.

For black women the advantages of dreadlocks are considerable:

Once formed, dreadlocks are way less work than most other ways for a black woman to maintain her hair.
It is completely natural: no dangerous chemicals needed.
It is a way to show pride in being black.

Most black women, at least in America, either put dangerous chemicals in their hair to straighten it or they wear wigs or weaves – hair that is not naturally theirs. So dreadlocks are one way to wear one’s own hair in a natural way.
Some companies do not like you coming to work in dreadlocks, but most will accept them if they look nice.

You need a special kind of shampoo to wash dreadlocks. Most shampoos have stuff that will stay in your hair after you wash it. Combing and brushing will get rid of it, but with dreadlocks you never comb or brush, so it will just build up in your hair and cause trouble.

The reason dreadlocks get that gray look is because of the wax that is used to help form and maintain them. You can do it without the wax but it is harder.

Natural-The natural methods is technically the best method for everyone's hair and causes 0 damage to the hair. Just let your hair do what it wants to do when you feel lil dreads starting to form begin separating them accordingly.
Advantages: This completely natural people nothing to it just letting it grow for itself.
Disadvantages:Well its natural but the only real problem would be the shape of the dreads and the size they will come out as. If you separate them the way you want then you could end up with great looking ones or messy but beautiful ones. Also this method is not for the people afraid to look a lil messy.
2strand Twist- Two strand twist seem to have become oddly popular in the dread community due to multiple artist getting them done. Its just two even groups of hairs twisted repeatedly into coils. No real damage is done in this method. (Works best on African hair)
Advantages:Its extremely simple to do barely any damage and if you want salon looking dreads i guess this would be for you.
Disadvantages:Until they mature a little sometimes gel will be needed.
Twist and Rip- Its similar to the 2 twist method but very different. With this method you will yet again gather the hair into two equal strands then twist them together then pull them down the middle to the scalp. This creates knots forming the dread. You would keep going down the dread till you get to the tip. Its one of the most recommend ways to create dreads
Advantages: Very simple like the 2twist method and very little damage done. Dreads become very nice through this method. Can be done on any hair texture.
Disadvantages: It does cause a certain amount of damage. But not as much as backcombing.
Backcombing- This method suggested by dread companies because of how you will look before they mature a little aka Sonic the Hedgehog Although this is how my dreads were formed I wouldn't suggest doing it. It causes stress against the hair follicles. With this method you section the hair off into blocks then take a section and comb towards the scalp with a metal comb the hair will begin bunching up at the scalp slowly forming the dread.
Advantages: Extremely simple to do anyone with a metal comb can do it. Can be done with any hair texture.
Disadvantages: Will cause you to look like Sonic for a couple of days or weeks. Damages the hair more than the first methods will. Also can be extremely painful if you have help.

WORST FOR YOUR HAIR-Crocheting-Latch Hook-Sadly this evil method is pushed upon people looking to get dreads done without getting the facts first. Crocheting will make your hair in to "perfect" looking dreads but will utterly damage it Its weaving the hair together.
Advantages: Well if you are one of those extremely impatient people I guess this is right for you it will give you instant looking dreads.
Disadvantages:This is one of the worst ways to form them. You are sticking a metal pin in and out your hair and often breaking the inner hairs. This causes so much weakness in the dreads and breakage at the root. Especially when to "maintain" these dreads you are to continually stick them. This reach for perfection is ridiculous and not natural.Interlocking Is the most pushed thing in salons for beginning and maintaining locks. Its the interloping of hair till the lock together. They twist the lock and pull it through the roots of the hair. This is quite damaging for the hair as the roots are often over tightened and weak to the point of falling off.
Advantages: They look slightly good for a period of time.
Disadvantages They will eventually fall out. This method is pushed on people cause salons make you think dreads have to be perfect and the only way to do this (to them) is constant locking. Also cause they get paid by the hour (around 80 to 100) to do this easy yet slow method. This method puts uneven stress upon the lock and roots. This can make the dread look uneven and eventually fall off the head onto your pillow most likely,Once you have done it too much there is no way to really help you recover.
Felting-The second worst way to begin dreads these create instant dreads but at a extremely high cost.
Advantages: Instant dreads thats it there's nothing else good about this.
Disadvantages: So many where should I start well they literally break your hairs to stick them together. This the rough insane version of crocheting . If you choose to do this your hair will most likely fall out or break off this method just causes that much permanent damage.

Maintenance- With dreads not much is needed to keep them in shape you are suppose to let them do their thing.
Keeping them clean: A residue free shampoo or soap is needed for this. Residues slow down the dreading process and slowly adds gunk into your hair. I personally My Black soap Shampoo You don't have to continuously wash your hair but it has to be clean. Overwashing your hair can cause it to dry out fast washing either twice a week or every two weeks is just fine your hair will not smell bad. To dry them i would first let them air dry a bit then use a blow dryer. When they are still new be careful while washing. As a way to deeply cleanse them a baking soda wash followed by organic (apple cider or vinegar) rinse will be perfect to make sure you get all the residue out your hair. Tightening roots Dont mess with them theres no need they tighten themselves but if you really feel the need to you could root rub. Which means basically rubbing the root of the hair against the scalp in a clockwise motion. I wouldn't do this cause it tends to weaken the roots and over tightening them is not good for the dreads. Just let them do their thing.Tightening the dreads There are many ways to attempt to tighten them sea salt(which dries black hair out) lemon juice rinses(which also dry your hair) to name a couple.Beads might help to tighten loos dread sections. Really the thing that will help you the most is to just let them do it themselves.

WAX- NEVER BUY THIS Dread wax is one of the worst buys you can ever make. Its for one non-water soluble meaning what ever you do its most likely wont come out if you use it. The only real ways to get out is either boiling your dreads, using industrial glue remover, repeated high temperature washings or just getting rid of them. All wax is is glue dread companies sell it cause they just want your money and they really don't care about your dreads. Dont buy anything from them. If you really need a wax substitute use straight up aloe vera oil from the plant. If someone from a salon or whatever tells you that you need wax ignore them cause they are ignorant, wax kills.

UPDATE: washing well we don't have to wash as often as others do so i recommend once a week or once every two weeks

Very excited for my holiday. Was very upset I had to put it on hold this year, 'cause I had delayed my may exams, in order to do them at a later date- due to the stresses of earlier this year :|

I know what camera I'm purchasing and bringing ('cause my DSLR is too large and my mini cam is sh*te quality).

I know what my playlist for travelling there will be.

...yesterday i went to another family reunion meeting (every other year we have a reunion in a different state). for the last 1.5 yrs, family in illinois have been meeting to plan for our july event. unfortunately, there's always tension, arguments, drama over some of the smallest things, but the issues flow from problems of years' past. hurt feelings of what was said time ago. and lack of interest in dealing with the gorilla in the room head on. but things came to a head yesterday. our normal 2-3 hour meeting extended into a 6 hr venting session. voices were raised. tears flowed. apologies were said. and hugs were given. and though i thought at one point this reunion would truly be the last that we'd be able to host together, we came full circle (as family should) and at least began to heal old wounds. emotionally, i was drained afterwards, but content in knowing that hopefully we can create some better memories with the time we have left. you said it right, marilyn. the only thing really important in this life are those you call family. and since nothing is promised us, we need to be mindful of how we spend our time together.

Hi Everyone,

My journey started in 2004, when I chopped off all my hair and grew my very own chemical-free, stubborn and nappy Afro! I researched locking methods in the meantime, and discovered sisterlocks - but I couldn't get them since there were no certified consultants anywhere in South Africa (nor the whole continent, at least back then).

I settled for traditional locks in 2007 which I kept for almost 3 years. I finally have gerrylocks since 2010, and I can honestly say I love the versatility of microlocks. I maintain my own hair, and you can view my trials, errors & triumphs at http://www.gerrylocs.blogspot.com/

The Bend Of My Hair

I accidentally went natural.

There was no come-to-jesus moment. No staged revolts against creamy crack. No late night epiphanies.

Eight years ago, I got my last perm and just never looked back. I didn’t walk out of the appointment vowing never to get another perm. I just never went back to my stylist, who I had been with for years.

I initially started off with braids and over the next several years wore a variation of sis twists styles. I received lots of compliments. When my hair was freshly done and even when it was time for maintenance, people would stop me all the time and ask me for my stylist’s business card. I even started a sis twist trend at work. I was often told how natural my hair looked.

But it wasn't natural. It wasn't MY hair.

I decided that I wanted to run my fingers through my hair. Everyday. In its natural state. I briefly considered my options. I had a beautifully thick head of hair. I could start wearing my hair out in various twist outs and roller sets. I could rock my fro. The possibilities were endless. It would allow me a chance to really get to know my hair and to see what it can do–good and bad.

However, I’ve always had loc envy. There is nothing like a crown of well-maintained locs – on women and on men. As I started researching, I discovered Sisterlocks. In talking to women who have them, I just knew they were for me. It just felt right.

My lock anniversary is on May 1-2, 2010. Join me on my journey towards fully loving and embracing the bend of my hair.

Hello! I'm Kimberly and my sisterlock birthday was January 15-17, 2010. Sisterlocks were my blessing when I came to the crossroads of wanting to be natural, wanting to be locked, but also wanting to be active (running). I've been running for over a decade so any hairstyle I chose whould have to accommodate that.

I have been natural since February 28, 2007. One day I got up and had my then-boyfriend/barber shave my short, relaxed cut right off - no transition necessary! From then until January 2009, I kept my hair shaved low. In 2009, I grew my hair into a 'fro. October 2009 was when I decided to try to start locks by coils. It wasn't practical for my active lifestyle, and lack of time. So in November, I uncoiled my hair and scheduled my sisterlock installation with the excellent Danielle.

First of all thank you Maryee for welcoming me to the family of the Locked Hair Blog Exchange. I AM CELEBRATING MY SECOND INSTALL OF SISTERLOCKS!!! I am very pleased that I made the decision to go natural. And choosing sisterlocks has been THE best choice that I feel within my heart I could have made. The versatility you have with sisterlocks is very rewarding. Versatility is what most people enjoy about their hair. Just by going natural does not mean that it is something we can not enjoy. I have had every hairstyle, weave and haircolor you can think of, and it never felt like the...real me. Now I feel like this is home. I can enjoy the ocean's waves, windy days, stormy nights, brisk mornings, and the humidity of hot summer afternoons, all while not worrying about my hair. This is because I have allowed myself to completely embrace my beautiful, nappy, kinky hair. I have refused to strangle, whip, straighten, "correct", complain about, fry, dye and lay to the side the hair that God has blessed me/us with. I love it when they say, "I got free when I got locked up!" 'Nough said! Much love for everyone! Ignore the ignorance and naysayers! Remember it's a journey, so be patient my fellow butterflies. I knew that it would lead to this. What I mean is: I knew that locs were the destination in my natural hair journey. I stopped perming my hair in 2004, and I have not looked back since. But, it wasn't all great from there. From 2004 until summer 2009 I wore my hair in twists, braids, sew ins, wigs...I wasn't perming my hair, but I wasn't rocking it either. Summer 2009 I decided it was time for some changes. No more braids...I wore my hair OUT. In the past, the only time I wore my hair loose was in between styles, but after reading a few natural hair blogs I decided to quit the weave cold turkey. I have had good and bad hair days, but I am fortunate that I am truly getting to know MY hair.

I am loving this locking process! I know I haven't posted in a while...I have been really busy. I wanted to take a minute to tell you ladies and gentlemen what is going on with my hair. I must say that I love it! It is really fitting into my lifestyle. I will admit that there are times when I am not so pleased with my baby locs. But now I am more carefree. I don't stress over it, and I really just let my hair do its thing.

I will style my hair occasionally, but for the rest of the month I am not going to style it at all. I am going to focus on keeping it moisturized and let it be.

My hair story, like many, has been filled with numerous plots twists, a few villains, and a bit of danger.

I am a fotki veteran, having a web album documenting my hair for almost 8 years. I have maintained that album from the bluegrass of Lexington Kentucky, the Capitol heights of Washington DC, the flashing lights of London England and now from my current home in Berlin Germany. During my nappy years I have adorned lock puffs, traditional locs, a cropped fade and now sisterlocks. I know a bit about this natural hair thing :)

Hello all,

Currently, I am residing in Sunny Southern California and I would love to meet up with any Loc Sisters near the SFV area. My Loc Anniversary is 8/9 and I have been enjoying the journey thus far. I am also looking forward to swinging my sexy long locks as I do my other love, Bellydance!!

I am excited to join this exchange especially since I stayed up endless nights browsing it before I had my very own Sisterlocks installed. I have been natural for over 6 years and I decided to go natural because I was tired of trying to force my kinks to lay down. It just wasn’t happening and I hated feeling self-conscious about looking like I needed a new perm when I just had it done only 2 weeks prior. I am so happy I made the decision to go natural knowing what I know now about relaxers.

Well with my hair natural, especially now having Sisterlocks, I can no longer be self-conscious because all I feel is free. Free to let my beautiful kinks be and even though this can sound cliché, I truly feel free to be ME!!

Braidlocks Down Under - 4 months In

My name is Yahvinah and I have been natural for the past 9 years.

I, like many others, never chose to get a perm, it just got given to me, and for many years I was trapped in the cycle of perming and thinning, and all of the other things that come with it. In 2000 I decided it was time to end it, I was sick of dealing with the lifestyle, and I have never looked back.

I have never been a high maintenance girl as far as my hair, and I have really been looking for something that is nice looking, and does not require the CONSTANT battle that my longer natural hair required. (I was not a fan of detangling).

Lets just say I had a COUPLE of Big Chops since 2000...

I have always been interested in locking, but never knew where to start, I always thought it would be too hard, and I knew free-forming wasn't for me. It didn't help that I relocated to Australia, not exactly a Mecca of Black Hair Care...

After a long distance obsession with Sisterlocks, I finally decided that going overseas to get them installed, and maintenance was not an option for me. But then I found out about braidlocks.

After LOTS of research, I decided braidlocks were the way for me to go. (I originally had a set of 2 strand twists, but I have since switched to braids) 15 hours and ~400 braids later, I was on my way. My braidlocks were created on the 29 September 2009.

I am not much of a product junky, but I do intend on finding out what works for my hair, and also what level of maintenance will allow me a balance of ease and manageability.

I hope this blog of my trials and errors, can help other aspiring braidlockers on their journeys, and perhaps make the transition a little bit easier.

My name is Raxxie. My journey is slightly different from many naturals. I've been natural my whole life. As a child I was never allowed to have a perm though my mother had one and swore by it.

I wore braids (extensions) since before I was 6 years old. I can't even imagine how much money was spent to have people braid my hair till I learned to do it myself. Then I learned how to weave. Then I started pressing my hair. So, my hair was either weaved, pressed, or braided all the time. I NEVER left it in its natural state. That bothered me. Why did I have to hide my hair? At the end of 2007 I had almost completely lost my curl due to heat damage and decided to stop the madness. I treated it, and cared for it till I got sick of the straight ends and BCed December 2007.

At the end of 2009 I realized how often I had my hair in box braids and was getting sick of re-doing it all the time. Plus, I lusted after the beauty of dreadlocks and considered them a natural progression in my natural journey, so Oct 12/09 I installed my last set of braids. I'm currently into my locking journey and I LOVE it!

17 months! My little fab locs have come a long way :-)

Hello everybody!!! I'm so excited to join this network and the rest of you on my loc journey! October 3, 2009 my 128 (I counted last night) baby interlocked locs were born over a 12 hour period thanks to my good friend!

I've been relaxer free since the latter part of 05 and didn't fully embrace wearing my curls until Summer 07 - what took me so long! As my hair started to grow and I experimented with different product and hairstyles, I always found myself having hair envy when I saw someone with a beautiful head of locs!

At the beginning of this summer, I decided that I would loc my hair up at the end of the summer. I thought this would be an easy process, but I was wrong. I did lots of research on different ways to begin locs and decided on tiny braids. With my hair being so fine, I figured that would be the only way to start them - I was wrong! 3 days after I did a test set of five locs, my braids unraveled! Ok, back to the drawing board.

Someone mentioned sisterlocks, but I wasn't in the mood to pay for that. I finally ran into someone who started their locs via interlocking and tried a few on my head and realized this was the way to go!

Greetings fellow locked sistren and kudos to you Maryee for providing this forum. I am excited to be on this my last locking journey. After several tries at traditional locks via single-strand twists and one stab at Sisterlocks - come join me on my final Sisterlocks journey!

Soft Spikes Roller Set

I love the look of manicured, traditional locks; however, the whole twist, wash, come loose, retwist, wash, come loose is too much for me. In the past I put any and everything in my soft, loose wave hair to "get it to lock". I just couldn't subscribe to the "don't wash your hair for six months" philosophy. No way, that's just nasty so I went through months and months (did I say months) of the "twist, wash, come loose".

One of the sisters in my congregation used to ask me about locking as she admired my "twists-to-locks" as I affectionately called them since my hair hadn't actually locked up. She went to a loctitian and commenced cultivating hers. Now they are shoulder length and doin' what they do! I found myself staring at her during the meetings thinking "I want locks!". To fast forward this story I decided due to the texture of my hair I would go the Sisterlocks route to achieving fierce dreads. The concept of being able to roll and style them held no fascination for me (like I said I LOVE traditional locks-the look, the size, everything); but being able to wash my hair early on is what attracted me to Sisterlocks.

Thanks to empowering sites on the WWW like LHBE I am able to be encouraged and educate myself about locking in general and Sisterlocks in particular. I look forward to learrning how to take care of my own hair as I have never been big on paying other folks to do my hair. Shortly after the first install attempt (7/09) I had every intention of taking the Consultant class in ATL this December. However, I have also been looking at and contemplating the Nappy Locks Business Kit. I might as well keep it real, I will be purchasing it in about 7 hours when I awaken for this day.

The latest: I am still in "install" phase for my Sisterlocks. Read my blog http://llovinlocks.blogspot.com/ and you'll see why. This has got to be THE longest Sisterlocks install in history.

Since July my hair has been cut minimally 6", I've dyed it dark brown to light, to lighter, to something else, then came to my senses and back to black. So, my locks do not look like the photos here. I DO miss my white hair. But, good news, I already see white peeking through at the roots. YESSS!!!!! I can't wait 'til it grows back. ;-)

My sisterlocks Journey in Photos ........

This photo represents my feeble attempt to curl the thicker locks. As you see, the curls are fewer, less dense, they separate and they don't last. I attempted to curl them much tighter than they appear here. This photo was taken before I took out the first 2 rows of locks and adding a little color. In the next photo, my first two rows are new locks. (Locks were picked out and replaced - a long tedious process.)
This photo was taken after my crown locks were combined. I took out the top two rows of about 5 "combined" locks and replaced them with about 13 new thinner locks. At the top, I no longer have the fullness shown in photos below.

What I enjoyed most about my locks was the ability to wear my hair forward. My top locks were thin and there were many giving me great styling flexibility.

I started my locs and maintained them myself. No professional or anyone to really guide me. Therefore, I have learned a lot! My Nappy Narration!!

When I first decided to wear my hair natural it was just a random thought. I didn't appreciate or like my natural hair. I thought it was difficult, damaged, and most of all unacceptable for me to be seen in public in such a way. In the end my whimsical decision to "go natural" turned into a journey that continues to grow into something more profound.

In April 2010 I will be celebrating my loc'd anniversary!! I am appreciating each part of my journey from the frizzies to the little buds. Blogging is becoming such a great way for me to document my journey and connect with other ppl with loc'd hair, I am one of two women in my entire family with locs so the feedback and sense of community here helps alot! Hiya! I’m a British Barbadian 'Banker' in London (UK) and have worn my hair natural for most of my life – except a period between 2002 and 2005 when I relaxed my hair in order to fit in with corporate Britain’s image of the ‘professional’ shortly after graduating from University.

I’ve come a long way since then – marriage, children and the personal realisation that I am not defined by my hair any more so than I am defined by the colour of my skin. I refuse to be stereotyped or pigeon holed based on the texture or style of my hair.

Since 1996, I have annually vacationed in Barbados and have been amazed at the increasing number of locked sisters and brothers, as well as the variety and creativity of the natural hair styles. During this year’s holiday I finally joined them and my SisterLocks were installed over 15 hours through April 27 & 28 2009.

Greetings fellow naturals! On March 23, 2009 I embarked on another step in my natural adventure. I got SISTERLOCKS and I absolutely love the decision that I made. I attribute some of the encouragement to go forth with locks to this same locked exchange community. There are a wealth of blogs that I checked out that answered many of my questions. There is so much freedom in having your hair locked. I am thrilled that I do not have to pick up a comb again and I can still maintain a variety of styles for different settings. People always ask the question, what is good hair and what is bad hair? Good hair is any hair that is beautiful and healthy. Fellow naturals our hair is beautiful and healthy.

My locks were birthed after fourteen hours on March 23rd. I reside in the state of TN. By profession I am an educator and I am an advocate for natural hair. I have been natural since May 2007. Greetings, I have been natural for 4 years and loved every minute of it. I had braids for a long time and then one day, BAM I went to church sporting a Fro. At the time, I never thought I could be a loc wearer because I kept thinking "If I decide I don't like them anymore, I will have to cut off all my hair". The mere thought of that was more than I could bear. I started locking my two oldest sons hair in March '08 and my younest son's hair in August '08. Still, I never thought I could be a loc wearer - but then I started to give it more thought and the more I thought about it, researched different methods, lurked through different blogs and worked on my sons locs, the more I started to long for them myself. After overcoming some huge fears in '08 - I decided to end the year jumping an even bigger hurdle - jumping into the land of LOCS. I gave birth on December 20th to 435 braidlocs. The best thing about them is, I did them all myself. Yippee for ME. LOL!! It was a lot of work but well worth it. I've been asked if they are sisterlocs which is quite a compliment because Sisterlocs are truly beautiful but, I would never spend that much money on my hair (don't mean anybody any harm, that's just my opinion). I started my natural hair journey in the summer of 2000. It was then I made the decision to stop relaxing, and start accepting myself for who I am. I was in hair school, and after studying the effects of chemicals on the hair I knew that my decision was a good one. I rocked different hairstyles then, braids, afro, press & comb. Still, I knew I wanted to go the loc way deep down inside therefore, I eventually went loc'd permanently in 2001. I haven't looked back since. In the pictures you can see my journey and how far I have come. Its been eventful, but nothing compliments me better or makes me feel as free as having loc'd hair. What an oxymoron huh? Well its not...the term dreadlocks came from individuals who decided the hairstyle is dreadful. But by looking at all of the beautiful people rocking locs now you can see there is nothing dreadful about it. Hello Everyone,

I started my locks with 2 inches of new growth and layered permed ends between 4-8 inches long. My locversary is 9/25/08 and I am loving my hair more every day. My sister, DrLocs II (http://www.tokiphd.blogspot.com/), started her braid locks about a week later. She has been encouraging me to go natural for years, must have been all of my whining about my hair :). I have been contemplating sisterlocks for about 2 years and now wonder what I was waiting for!

After being natural for eight years I was completely bored and slightly discouraged about my hair...then surfing the net one day I found the perfect solution....sisterlocks! A quote from a fellow microbraidloced blogger "I am not OVER my hair yet. Two years later and I am a little more content but definitely NOT over it!" coupled with some major loc problems urged me to take the plunge over to sisterlocks after being 3 months microbraidloced.

Cassidy....A little girl and her Sisterlocks

Cassidy was born in June 2004 and her Sisterlocks were born just 4 1/2 years later! We are thrilled to be able to start out her locs early, knowing that by the time she is 8 or 9 her locs will be long and healthy and she will have so many options with her natural hair. I don't think it would be fair for me to debut Cassidy here without her input, so I brought her over to the computer and she hopped up into my lap as we scrolled though all of your pictures and stories. She said to me, "All those girls have locs like me? I want mine to be down to "here" like hers, and beautiful like "hers", and I want some of them pretty earings in my hair too mama"! Thanks to all of you, Cassidy is so proud of her natural hair. Some things I will never be able to give my baby alone, because she is of African heritage and I am not. I thank God for the women that He puts into our lives to be role models for Cass, and this sisterlocking experience has filled a missing piece of our life. The experience for Cassidy and I to hang out in the city where I was the minority, so God could remind me of how Cassidy feels on most other days. The time in the salon with all the African American women in and out, chatting away, talking to her, lifting her up and encouraging me. The groups of you genuine, awesome, loving ladies to write to me and Cassidy on her blog has been priceless. She loves to read all the comments and I can see such a feeling of acceptance on her face....it's a beautiful thing.
So, all that to say that this journey is much more to us than hair alone. It's a way for me to show Cassidy how proud I am of who SHE is, how God made HER, and for her to love herself naturally. And I had no idea the love and support we would find among the loc'd family out there! A void has been filled in both our lives and we can't wait to see what the future holds, what opportunities will come, what life will bring about as Cassidy grows up loving her locs!

Before I started my locks I was waring Braids for years after my hair broke off from a perm I had before as a teenager.
I never wanted to go there again. I also wore a Maxwell style Afro, I liked it a lot but I always wanted locks so in 2000

Hello everyone!

I updated my blog on April 4, 2010. I have new pictures posted that I took right after I finished re-tightening my hair. Check me out! My hair is long enough to pull back in a band and re-tightenings are getting faster.

My blog is primarily about my natural hair journey, but I also have some posts on what it is like being an underrepresented minority at a predominantly white institution. I have also been blogging about my daughter, who in April 2009 was hospitalized and diagnosed with anxiety and depression.

The picture I have posted here was taken about 2 years ago and shows my traditional locs, which I started in 1999 with single braids. In February of 2008 I decided to start over and cut my hair. After 6 months of wearing a short, curly fro I was ready to loc it up again. So in September 2008 I put about 400 micro braids in my hair to start smaller locs. Visit me at Dr. Locs II!

Since day one I knew that I was going to love my hair. I didn't go through the scalpy stage you hear about. After wearing my hair natural for over four years, and having obtained just about every natural hair style known to wo-man.

Even after wearing wigs and weaves and getting press n'curls in the name of "keeping it natural" I started my long overdue quest for the perfect locs to suit me.
I googled daily on types of locs and found one that I could easily do and maintain myself. My BraidLoc-Anniversary is 8-16-08. Had I been better informed of the many alternatives to locked styles I would have chosen braidlocs years ago. There is unlimited versatility with styling. You have the choice to not chop off all of ones permed hair at one time to get these locs, which I've heard many women speak about. My favorite fact about them is that they're extrememly cost effective. What more can you ask for ?

...that's just 12 years of sisterlocks under the scarf, give or take a big chop or two over the years. i came home to sisterlocks in january of 1996 with a full head of natural hair which kept my two consultants busy for two days installing my sisterlocks. i have been a blog lurker for a while and finally requested to join the lhbe. i am pleased to have this opportunity to virtually meet other sisters with [name your own]locks and welcome all to my blog.

Braidlocs in Africa

Hi everyone. Over the week of July 16 2008, I installed my braidlocs myself. If it wasn't for everyone else's blogs on here, I'd probably have never gone this route. Thank you for inspiring me, and I hope my journey will also inspire someone else who has no choice but to go the DIY route. I started with 1cm of natural hair and a LOT of processed hair whuich I eventually cut off. I woke up one day and fell in love w/ myself. We say we love ourselves, but do you remember the moment you fell in love w/ yourself. For me it was February 2004 in Philadelphia, PA @ about 2:00 in the AM, sitting in a braid shop on South Street. Even though I had "kinky" hair added in to give me the look of nappy twist, that moment when i saw myself...that way... did something to me. From that point I realized I never wanted to chemically treat my hair again. I wanted me in the most natural state. Thus, the journey began. (January 2005)

Hello everyone! My braidlocs were born after three days of labor but joyfully were welcomed here on March 6th, 2008. I haven't looked back since. I'm embracing my locs...my individual locs....they make me feel so natural! I'ts all me!!!! Nothing added and nothing taken away. I am Penny and I have been locked since Jan 08". I started with a relaxer. I am happy about my decision to lock and will never look back. I have known about sister locks since the late 90's and I have gone back and forth with natural hairstyles through the years and about 3 years ago I tried sister locks but it was difficult for me for various reasons.Now I am wiser and more educated and comfortable about the process and the phases and I am no longer apologizing for my hair. My sisterlock installation was April 13-14. I am so thankful for the supportive loc family for sharing their journey. That is what inspired me to just do the darn thing. Getting sisterlocks was one of the best decisions I decided for my hair.
